Morning in Sneem

Born to be wild!

I saw these three Vespas parked outside O’Shea’s pub in Sneem back in June. A pink pub & Vespas – my imagination, strange thing that it is, started running riot. I could just imagine, three bikers on a road trip, drinking beer, chasing women, scaring old ladies and generally causing trouble.

There was a Vespa convention on in Killarney that weekend and thousands of crazy Vespa-owners had ridden from all over Europe to be there – some even flew their Vespas over from further afield. A dedicated and funny bunch.

Kylemore Abbey

Taken on an overcast day at Kylemore Abbey. As far as I can remember, Kylemore Abbey was originally a private home built by Mitchell Henry back in the 1860s. Mitchell, a wealthy English politician, spared no expense during construction of the house.

For me, the highlight of the grounds has to be the walled garden – it originally featured 21 glass houses, which were heated by boilers which allowed him to grow banannas and other tropical plants. And as most of the glasshouses were linked, it also gave guests a dry warm place to walk on the days when the weather was being less than cooperative. Sadly all of the original glass houses were collapsed over time, however two have been restored to their former glory.

In the 1920s, the Benedictine Community founded the Abbey and opened a boarding school. They are doing a fabulous job maintaining the grounds.

I really wish I could have seen this place in the 1800s – it must have been something else.

My watch – with it’s incorrect date and crusty strap. Needs a good cleaning.

Jul 3.

A full 360 Degree Panorama of County Limerick taken from the top of Knockfennell Hill beside Lough Gur, Co. Limerick. From the top of this hill, you can see Thomond Park in Limerick (although I missed it myself… it’d be towards the left end of the photo), all the way over to the Galtee Mountains and right down to Co. Cork. Fantastic.

This is a combination of 19 different photos – stitched together using PTGUI.

Athea Road Races

The speed in Athea at the weekend was absolutely incredible. I was at the races before, but only saw one low speed corner. Standing at the top of the hill by the paddock the speed these guys were travelling at was nothing short of absolutely mental considering they didn’t have a car around them.

… but a Zetor is better. A phrase that Síofra often says for some unknown reason. I managed to get a shot of the two in one place at one time! Excuse the over-processed look of this one.
